History

We founded S.T.E.A.M.punk to inject academia with a little bit of punk and to put on kick ass S.T.E.A.M. events outside of the stuffy ivory tower. We had a passion for science communication and co-founded Science On Tap-SLC.

After 17 successful talks and events we are expanding to bring on all of academia. With years of experience in science outreach, education, art, design, non-profit management, and community organizing we are stoked to make S.T.E.A.M.punk Academy a thing.

We are always looking for people who want to get involved and organizations that want to collaborate. So reach out!

We create S.T.E.A.M. events and activities in the community that are radically inclusive, howlingly irreverent, and wicked smart.

Sky Hatter

Co-FOUNDER And Creative Director

In 3rd grade Sky Hatter raised some red flags when she wrote “E is for dolphin because dolphins use echolocation.” in an alphabet book assignment. It was clear early on that she was going to be doing something that combines her artistic talents and insatiable curiosity.

She earned her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and began a career in graphic design that spanned editorial, books, and scientific exhibit design. In 2017 she co-founded Science On Tap SLC and became the Chief Creative Officer. These days she has her dream jobs: being half of the marketing team for the Utah Arts Alliance, working in the Urban Arts Gallery, and being the co-founder and creative director of S.T.E.A.M.punk.

Jaimi Butler

Board Member

Jaimi Butler is the coordinator of the Great Salt Lake Institute, housed at Westminster College. Despite the Great Salt Lakes’ reputation for being inhospitable Jaimi fell in love with the lake and made it her place. After graduating with her Fisheries and Wildlife degree from Utah State University in 1999 Jaimi has helped increase knowledge and shape perceptions of the Lake through work in the private sector, government, and academia. Jaimi can barely remember a time when she wasn’t using airplanes, boats, four-wheelers, airboats, and stand up paddle boards to get around one of Utah’s most amazing ecosystems.

Jaimi’s primary areas of studies include the brine shrimp and bird populations that thrive at the lake. When she’d not knee deep in salty water doing research or grand documents, Jaimi and her students are likely educating the community about the importance of the lake.
