Gingerbread Bridge Building Contest on Dec. 18

At the Kiki Cabaret Jolly Jezebel Jubilee pre-party at the Alliance Theater

This year we are bringing our signature holiday contest to Kiki Cabaret’s Jolly Jezebel Jubilee, a Punk Rock Pin Up XXX-Mas celebration. Register (we have limited space so don’t delay!) then a week before we will release the rules for you to get building. On December 18th the contest will take place at the pre-party for the Kiki Cabaret at the Alliance Theater at Trolley Square. Judging will take place then the crushing of your creations with fruitcakes will commence!

Your mission is to build an 12" bridge using gingerbread that can support the weight of many fruitcakes. We are giving you a week to gather your materials, design, build, and test your bridges. You can only use edible materials, and holiday themed foods will give your score a big boost. Then you will bring your bridges to the Conference Room of the Alliance Theater at 7pm so that the judging may begin! Then you after your bridge and dreams of glory have been crushed you can enjoy the delights of the Jolly Jezebel Jubilee!

The Rules

You have a week to build your model bridge using your own edible materials. Then you will drop off your bridges at the Alliance Theater at Trolley Square on Dec 18th. Judging and crushing by fruitcakes will happen that night at the pre-party to the Kiki Cabaret Jolly Jezebel Jubilee. The event is 21+ and needs a ticket for entry. Be sure to get tickets soon as it always sells out!

By participating you are approving STEAMpunk Academy to use photos of you and your creations for social media and stuff. But if there’s an issue because you are on the lamb, let us know.

  • Take lots of photos while building and post on your own Instagram, Facebook, and Tinder

  • Be sure to tag us! Facebook and Insta @STEAMpunkAcademySLC Twitter @STEAMpunkSLC  #Gingerbridge2021

No limit on team size, but please be COVID chill.

The winning team will get the most excellent white elephant gifts.

Bridges can only be built using approved materials and dimensions.

  • It must resemble a bridge and keep on the holiday theme. Added creativity within that theme is encouraged!

  • Minimum span across the bridge from support to support  must be 12 inches. “That’s what she said!”

  • Minimum height of the bridge is 1 inch. If you do an arch type bridge, span will be calculated from wherever the height reaches to 1 inch to where the height descends to 1 inch.

  • 60% of it must be comprised of gingerbread, graham crackers, or Pop Tarts. Biscotti is ok, but you must be willing to eat it.

  • Maximum thickness of the  walls or flooring is 0.5”

  • Every single thing used must be edible-even anything used to glue. It doesn’t have to taste great, however. If you want to bake your own gingerbread with candy cane rebar, we love it!

  •     Try and stick with holiday type foods. Keep it on theme!

  • Impartial judges will score based on appearance and creativity. They cannot be bribed*

    • *except with very expensive whiskey

  • Judging will be based on both looks and integrity for a total possible score of 69. (see score sheet below)

  • Looks judging will be based solely on the subjective taste of the judge(s). Deal with it. They will rate your design on a scale turned up to 11. (see score sheet below)

  • For integrity, there are small and large fruitcakes to stack for points. Each fruitcake must hold for Three “Mariah Careys” to count and another to be added.

Technical facts: The two big fruitcakes span 8” and each weigh 56 ounces/3.5 pounds. The two little ones span 6.5” and weigh  32 ounces/2 pounds. The judges are fans of brutalist and gothic architectural styles, as they sound the most badass.
