Don’t Pity The Fool: The Euphoric Pursuit of Agony With Leigh Cowart

This April Fools' Day learn why you don’t have to pity the fool with S.T.E.A.M.punk Academy. From deranged pranksters to your friend that runs way too much, discover the euphoric world of masochism in our everyday lives with science journalist Leigh Cowart in a NSFW event around their book, Hurts So Good: The Science and Culture of Pain on Purpose.

We'll start with a burlesque performance by the talented Madazon Can Can. Then, we'll commence with the learning. We'll chat with Leigh about their book, hear some passages, and ask some questions. For those who think they can take the heat, you can compete in a good old fashioned Carolina Reaper eating contest. Stay for the cocktail hour to chat with Leigh and, if you choose to purchase a book after all this, get it signed by the author.

We are asking for a $20 donation to help with the cost of putting this event on. You can donate at the door or purchase a ticket now.

This event is 21+ and vaccine required.

Virtual Ginger Bridge Contest

We are going virtual this year with our annual Gingerbread Bridge Building Contest! Your mission is to build a 9" bridge using gingerbread that can support the weight of many fruitcakes. Instead of being given supplies for you to build the night of destruction, we are giving you a week and letting you get your own materials to do it on your own time. Then you will drop off your bridges at Kiitos Brewing, 608 West 700 South, on Saturday Dec 5th and we will live stream the judging and destruction that night.

Drunk Science: Alcohol in Space

This Pie ‘n Beer Day, we are taking Utah’s pioneer spirit to the great frontier of Mars! Join STEAMpunk Academy for our Drunk Science: Virtual Happy Hour at 7pm MST Friday July 24th (Earth time) where we interview Chris Carberry; the former executive director of The Mars Society and currently the CEO and co-founder of Explore Mars, Inc., a nonprofit advancing the goal of sending humans to Mars within the next two decades. And most importantly, he wrote the book, Alcohol in Space. If we’ve learned anything from quarantine, they’re gonna need it!

We will livestream on our facebook page and our youtube channel here https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZiqU2_wmY2V0ZljjTZ4DvA

Adult Science Fair Kick Off Party

Do you long for the days of dioramas? Are your kids sick of you helicoptering their school projects? Do you have a burning question about the world you need answered? Well look no further- it's the 1st Annual Adult Science Fair!
We will host a Kickoff-Party (live and/or streamed) on June 18th at Kiitos Brewing and teams will have a couple weeks to come up with a science project.
Over the course of the summer you will conduct your experiments with the personal guidance of expert mentors! Then you will create a tri-fold or diorama of it, and compete for big prizes at a booze fueled Science Fair in early September at Kiitos!

What would a science project look like? Well, maybe you want to know which hangover cure is most effective. Or maybe you want to get a bit more techy and use public data to find out what the fuck is going on with COVID. Or you could test which ski wax is better. Whatever you come up with, so long as it follows our rules explained at the Kick-Off, we love it. Don't be afraid to get funny, creative, and edgy.

Stay tuned for registration info and project guidelines. Even f you can't make it to the Kick-Off, it will be recorded and we still want you to join!
You can also follow here and on Insta @ STEAMpunkacademySLC
You will need to be 21+ to participate and there will be a small registration fee to cover costs and to keep you from flaking out. There's science behind that.

2-Part Workshop

Wednesdays February 19 & 26, 6-8 pm

From 1942-1945, more than 11,000 Japanese Americans were incarcerated at the Topaz internment camp near Delta, Utah. Topaz incarcerees circulated art, literature and opinion pieces in publications such as Trek and All Aboard. These publications share compelling, first-person accounts of life in wartime. In this workshop, we’ll explore the writing and publishing of Topaz incarcerees and we’ll create our own small-scale, do-it-yourself publications.

Location: CWC, 210 East 400 South, #8
Cost: Free. Registration is required. Register here.

Go to www.slcc.edu/cwc or call 801-957-2192 for more information.

Beyond the Gate

Jane Beckwith was born in Delta, Utah and heard references to Topaz while she was growing up. It wasn’t until she was teaching English at Delta High School that she realized the civil rights violations that the United States imposed on people of Japanese ancestry during World War II. Her interest in Topaz grew as she met people who had been forced to leave their homes and businesses in the Bay Area and live in the difficult conditions that the camp imposed on people. The history of Topaz is complex, contradictory, and compelling and now is told in the exhibits at the Topaz Museum which is located in Delta.
